I found a way to get to the fancy swirly letters. :-) First, you have to access the character map for your font. In Windows 7, click the start/windows logo and then in the search box type in charmap. The character map will open up and you can select your font from the dropdown box. Then, scroll until you find the fancy letter (or whichever symbol you want), select it and then copy it. Hint: if it doesn't show up in the "characters to copy" box, then it's not selected yet. Then, in your program (I used MS Word), right click where you want it to go and click on "paste - keep source formatting" button. It should paste right into your document. Another tip is this - you can select your entire word while in the character map and then paste the whole thing into your document. For example, you could put in the entire Yolanda word, making sure to choose the swirly letters where you want them, and then select the entire word to copy. The whole word will paste into your program at once. You can still change the size of it as well as spacing, etc.

Also, for those using Nexus font (and perhaps other font programs), if you open the character map within Nexus and click on the letter you want to put into your document, over on the right hand side of the screen, towards the top, you'll see DEC: followed by a number (mine was 5 digits). Remember or write down that number somewhere. In your program, (again, I was in MS Word) holding down the alt key, type in that number and your letter should appear.

Here are some other possible ways to get these swirls, if neither of these work for you. :-) http://superuser.com/questions/170448/how-can-i-get-keyboard-shortcuts-for-certain-characters-listed-in-character-map

Good luck!

I had to learn on my own how to get the swirls and flourishes that come with the font. You would do a great service to other designers if you passed along this information. Crafters Unite and Defeat the Forces of Evil Ignorance!!!

Here's how I get my fancy swirls. There may be other options - this is what I do. Download and install your font. Download and install a free program called Nexus Font. (I put a short cut to Nexus on my screen). Open Nexus Font and it will load all your fonts. Search for the font you want - in this case, let's use Yolanda. Enter Yolanda into the search and it will come up individually. Minimize Nexus Font. I like to just make it smaller by using the adjustments rather than making it disappear. Open the document in which you want to type, i.e., MSWord or Silhouette. Type the word. In this case, let's type the word Yolanda. Click back to Nexus Font. On the left side of Nexus is a selection of icons. Chose the Character Map (I think it says CHARMAP). This will open a pull-down menu on the right side. Scroll all the way down and select Private Use Area. TaDaa! This will show all of the swirls and flourishes available for Yolanda font. Click on the swirly capital Y like the one in the picture above. It will appear as a teeny-tiny insanely tiny letter in the selection box to the right. OK, here's where it get a little hinky. You will notice after squinting at the screen for the itsy-bitsy letter that there's a Copy button. Don't use it - It's A Trick! Instead, use your mouse to highlight the letter in the selection box - yes, I am referring to the letter you can barely see. Once highlighted, right click on your mouse to select Copy. Go back to your document with the word Yolanda typed. Highlight the Y in Yolanda and click Paste. The lovely swirly Y will appear in your document. Repeat with the lowercase a. A note of caution: Sometimes the Private Use Area letters get mixed up. You may choose one swirly Y and get the one next to it or a few rows down. You can try some different letters to see if you can find your preferred swirl or you can do what I do and just decide to love the swirl you get. This happens only occasionally. I know this sounds complicated, but it is worth it to get the beautiful fonts. After you've used Nexus Font a couple of times, it will become second nature to use it and you will be so happy!!
