Kidlit: a fun serif font!

By geekmissy in Fonts / Serif $12

Kidlit is a serif font with just enough wiggle and squiggle to its lines to let its hand-drawn character shine. This font contains not one ... not two ... but THREE complete alphabets, so you can mix and match letters to your heart's content. Stick with the straightforward regular letters, or kick your project up a notch with some extra-tall, extra-short, or extra-swirly alternates.

Kidlit: a fun serif font! Description

NEW: If you don't have easy access to OpenType-friendly software, I've now broken out the three alphabets of Kidlit into three separate files! So you can either install the original Kidlit font, with all of the alphabets coded in as contextual alternates and stylistic alternates, or you can install the three Kidlit-Alphabet font files, where each alphabet lives independently. And I've included a PDF helpful hints guide to help you choose which way to go.

Kidlit also contains over 200 accented characters for foreign language support (including English, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Romanian, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish, Esperanto, Czech, Dutch, Welsh, Filipino, Turkish, and more!)

Kidlit includes:

  • Both OTF and TTF file formats
  • 52 standard uppercase and lowercase letters
  • 52 bouncy alternate uppercase and lowercase letters
  • 52 additional swash alternate uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Numbers and puncutation
  • Over 200 accented characters for foreign language support
  • Fully PUA-encoded for Character Map / Glyphs panel access
  • And as an extra bonus, I'm throwing in both transparent PNG and vector SVG versions of the monster squad monster, as seen on the t-shirt image above!

The original Kidlit file contains OpenType features (stylistic alternates and contextual alternates). In order to use these alternates, you need to install the OTF version of the font, and your software needs to be able to access OpenType features.

Some programs have OpenType feature access built in (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, CorelDraw, QuarkXpress 7+, and more). Many other programs that support Unicode will allow you to import OpenType alternates by copying them from Character Map (PC) or Font Book (Mac) and pasting them into your program.

If your software doesn't have ready access to OpenType features, please go into the "OTF Alphabet Files" folder and install the three Kidlit-Alphabet font files instead. Check the included helpful hints PDF for extra guidance!

Wish the extra characters were just in their own TTF file so that we could use them in any application :(

UPDATE: I've broken out the alphabets so they all live in their own separate files (in both TTF and OTF formats). Alphabet 1 contains the original letters, as well as all of the numbers and punctuation; Alphabet 2 is the first set of alternate letters, and Alphabet 3 is the second set. I've also added in a PDF helpful hints guide that shows what letters live in which file. Enjoy!
