Reference Information.
侍 Samurai were the hereditary military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan from the 12th century to their abolition in the 1870s. They were the well-paid retainers of the daimyo (the great feudal landholders).
- In Japanese, the samurai are generally called Bushi. It means “warrior or samurai”.
- By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai were usually associated with a clan and their lord, and were trained as officers in military tactics and grand strategy.
- They cultivated the bushido codes of martial virtues, indifference to pain, and unflinching loyalty, engaging in many local battles. Bushido was the set of codes of honour and ideals that dictated the samurai way of life, loosely analogous to the European concept of chivalry.
- Yamamoto Tsunetomo, Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai
“Singlemindedness is all-powerful.”
“Respect, Honesty, Courage, Rectitude, Loyalty, Honour, Benevolence.”
“Knowing the Way is to know your own faults.”
“One cannot advance without great courage.”
“Victory and defeat are matters of the temporary force of circumstances.”
